The sims is a simulation game that (duh) simulates real life. You get to create your "sims" and they can get married, get a job, have children, etc. The age definitely depends on your maturity but the average age is 15/16 and up. Younger kids can definitely play too. It is an extremely addicting but fun game.
The Sims 3 is the base game and there are many separate expansion packs that add different aspects to the game. Supernaturals adds supernautralists, seasons adds season, generations adds more family things, etc. Stuff packs add more stuff like clothing, furniture, etc.
