The Southern Appalachian Dialect or Southern Mountain dialect or Appalachian English, especially in east Tennessee, Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City area as well as as Northwest North Carolina, Boone, Blowing Rock, area and Southwest Virginia, Abingdon, Bristol, and Coal country, Wise, Dickenson, Russel Counties tend to elongate the "I" sound, as in Fine or Alright would be pronounced as, F-i-ne and Alr-i-ght with emphasis on the "I" while no emphasis is put on the consonant, except in certain cases with the letter "R" and the letter "L" a lot emphasis is placed on those consonants.

When you ask someone how they are it is usually stated "how are you" and the reply is "I'm fine" or "I am alright", never "I am good". Another example is when someone asks a question for example, "have you seen my keys", and there is no reply right away, the person who asked the question will say "Say" to invoke a response.

Within this particular region most emphasis is always placed on vowels. "Y'all" is never said. It is always "you all" or "yousens; which is closer to West Virginia and within West Virginia. In that area you see more emphasis on consonants. Words like "warsh" and "warshington" begin to appear. This goes into Maryland and parts of Pennsylvania.

Within North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia it is similar to Eastern Tennessee SWVA accents however, different phrases are used. "Gussied up" means dressed well. This accent is usually softer but not as soft as Paula Deen's accent which is a coastal southern accent similar to central to Piedmont Virginia Roanoke to Richmond.

In the Southern Appalachian, Appalachia is pronounced with a "CH" sound and in Northern Appalachia is Pronounced with a "SH' sound.

The word dialect refers to the?

A "dialect" is simply the form of a language spoken in a certain place. For example, the Southern dialect of English (Howdy, y'all) or the Brooklyn dialect (Fugghedaboutit!). Can be compared to accent, although an accent is explicitly the result of learning multiple languages and a dialect is simply the way everyone around speaks.
