The USSR came into being after the Russian revolution. It largely consisted of Russia, but other countries either joined the USSR voluntarily or were dragged along by their earlier associations with Imperialist Russia. The USSR ultimately consisted of the following 15 SSR's - Armenia Azerbaijan Belorus Estonia Georgia (Gruziya) Kazakhstan Kirgizstan Latvia Lithuania (Litva) Moldova Russia Tadjikistan Turmenistan Ukraine Uzbekistan Since the break up of the USSR, all of these SSR's have returned to independent states although some still rely to varying degrees on Russia for some government functions. ∙ 9y agoAfter the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was dissolved in 1991, 15 independent states became known as the Former Soviet Union (FSU) or Former Soviet Republics. Russia is recognized internationally as the successor to the USSR. 12 of the 15 republics joined to form the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and six of those also participate in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). The other 3, the Baltic states, became part of the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
