Why is history difficult?

History as a study is difficult because it is in the past and most of the people and things no longer exist in the current world. It involves a lot of investigation into what we do still have. You can't simply recreate events and civilizations to study them. History as a school subject can be difficult because it is entirely memorization of facts like names and dates and some people can't absorb it all in time to pass a test.

Define the term history?

What is History? I think history is the past. Everything that has happened in the past from the beginning of time to the moment I typed the word "moment" has happened and is therefore the past. The study of history is different to the definition of History because we do not tend to study Barrack Obama's first cheese sandwich but we usually study the more earth shattering events such as Queen Elizabeth who had such a big impact on the world and England that we study her and everything she did to see how she did it, but more importantly, why she did it. History is a why. It's one thing saying what happened, but it is another to explain why it happened. The why is where all the History debates come from. The why is the reason we study history. If we know why the Second World War started, if a similar situation comes again we will do things differently in order to avoid the war. We study history because we are interested to see what our race did back then, and to try to understand how everything around us developed and came to be what it is now. Take the mobile phone for example. 100 years ago Alexander Graham Bell came up with the idea of a telephone. The telephone that he made has progressed over the years into the iPhone 3GS. In the 1600's, the Human Race were almost alien to the current Human Race. It is interesting to see what they were like back then, and how different they were from us. History is the Why in the What and the What in the Past. We study it because it is us, and everything around us. OR... If you have trouble filtering out the crap in the previous entry: History is the study of past events through records - primarily written acounts. Therefore, 'History' does not cover any period in time prior to the invention of writing. All things prior to this are classed as 'Pre-history'. Thus, it could be argued that history's shady origins can be traced back to Mesopotamia circa. 3500 BC.

The independent variable is the thing you are changing. The dependent variable is the result you are trying to measure. In a caffeine study, the amount of caffeine given to a subject would probably be the independent variable.
