September 16th, 1810 is the accepted, official day of independence. It is like the 4th of July in the USA - it marked the beginning of the struggle for independence from a European power. The date was when Father Miguel Hidalgo issued a statement and speech in the town of Dolores (now called Dolores Hidalgo). He called for like-minded citizens to rise up in arms against the Spanish rulers. The speech was ended with a "grito" or cry of freedom. Although the actual words were not recorded, this is how the grito is given by the President of Mexico every 16th of September. "Viva Mexico!", Viva la independencia! Vivan los heroes!"
