Australia's agriculture is very diverse. Livestock forms a major component of the agricultural industry. Beef cattle is a thriving industry, as are sheep for meat ("fat lambs") and wool. Dairy cattle, pigs and poultry Are also important in Australia's agriculture.
Because of Australia's range of climates and soil types, the country is able to grow nearly any crop. Australia grows a lot of cereal crops - wheat, barley, oats for example and also leguminous crops - beans, lentils, chickpeas. Corn is an increasingly popular food crop, as is rice.
Fresh produce is also part of Australia's agriculture. There is a huge variety of fruits and vegetables - apples, Oranges, melons, citrus, tropical, Pears, potatoes, onions, salad vegetables, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes - anything you can imagine. Australia has a very strong stonefruit industry (cherries, peaches, apricots, nectarines, etc) while the tropical areas supply pineapples, mangoes, and bananas.
Sugar cane forms a significant part of the agricultural industry in the eastern and north-eastern regions.
Australia has a great variety of agricultural products, bu the main ones are cattle, sheep and sheep products (e.g. meat and wool), wheat, milk, barley, sorghum, corn, cotton, canola, chick peas, soya beans, maize, sunflower seeds, fruits (especially apples, oranges and stone fruits) and vegetables, poultry, pigs and sugar cane.
Australia has a free enterprise system and so long as agricultural products are produced in a manner regarded safe by the Australian quarantine authority's they can be sold here. there are a great variety of fruits vegetable fish and prepared meats and dairy products available that are produced outside of Australia.
