In hieroglyphs the ancient Egyptian word for a domestic cat is written with the three consonants miw (where i represents a sound that does not exist in English). Whatever vowels were included when this word was spoken, it must be in imitation of the mewing of a cat.

The most well-known goddess of cats is Bastet. She is one of the 13 known cat-gods or goddesses. I am pretty sure that she is the current goddess of cats. (by the way, this was completely re-written by ezzyt)

The ancient Egyptian word for a domestic cat was written miw in hieroglyphs.

This represents three consonants (i represents a sound that does not exist in English) and since vowels were not written we can never know how the word was said, but it certainly comes from the "meow" sound made by cats.
