The Romans did not have trained field doctors or a formal field medical corps.

The Latin for doctor is medicus (plural medici). Hoverer, the use of this word was different than our use of the word doctor. Although the Romans did have trained doctors who learnt the medical craft of the Greeks, the word medicus was also often applied very loosely and indiscriminately to anyone who had some degree of rough knowledge in medicine or first aid and to practitioners of folk medicine.

Only the general had trained doctors. They tended to his care.

On the field, the legion had men called medicus ordinarius, medicus cohortis and medicus legionis. However, they were primarily soldiers and were not trained doctors. They were soldiers who had demonstrated skills or learned wound dressing and very basic surgery. Therefore they were first aiders, rather than doctors. It is likely that newer medici were soldiers who learned for the older medici in the legion.

For the most part, care was administered by the soldiers themselves who treated each other's wounds.

The sick and seriously wounded were transported in wagons to garrisons, which could be hundreds of miles away. The Garrisons had valetudinaria (singular valetudinum, from valetudo which means good health) which were hospitals. These were under the command of the garrison commander (praefectum castrorum). They had trained medici However, these were regarded primarily as centres for the treatment of the sick and only the solders with the most serious wounds were taken there.
