How many bananas does he have total to begin with? I am just assuming that he has 3,000 bananas, can carry 1,000 at a time, and has to travel 1,000 miles to get to the market, eats 1 banana every mile, can't go anywhere without bananas, and can store them any place along the way. The largest amount he can get to the market is 533 1/3 bananas. This is how to get it:

First thing, he gathers 1,000 bananas, then goes 200 miles, drops off 600 bananas there, then goes back. He grabs another 1,000 and at the 200 mile mark, where he left 600 bananas, he gets another 200 bananas (leaving 400 at the 200 mile mark). Now he has 1,000 bananas again. Now lets divide 1,000 into thirds: 333 1/3 to get to the next (storehouse?), 333 1/3 to store, and 333 1/3 to get back to the previous storehouse (so now he has 400 bananas at the 200 mile mark and 333 1/3 bananas at the 533 1/3 mile mark). So now he goes back to the 200 mile mark, picks up 200 bananas because he's out of bananas, and gets back to his oasis. Now for the final 1,000 bananas. He gets 1,000 bananas, goes 200 miles, picks up the last 200 bananas (so now he's back to 1,000 bananas), goes 333 1/3 miles, picks up the 333 1/3 bananas there (again has 1,000 bananas), and goes to the market. At the market, he has 533 1/3 bananas.
