Tail to hydrophobic Tail, in the hydrophobic interior of the micelle, and all the while the acid heads of the lipids form the micelle's exterior face times two: one to the exocytoplasmic surFACE and the other to the endocytoplasmic surFACE.

They call the membrane the phospholipid bilayer because it is composed of two layers of phospholipids. A phospholipid is made up of a phosphate head (o) with two hydrocarbon tails (ll). so it looks something like this:

o

ll

The head is hydrophilic, meaning it likes water. The tails are hydrophobic, meaning they don't like water. The phospholipids arrange themselves in a way so that the tails don't touch water:

outside of cell

o o o o o o o o o

ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll

ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll ll

o o o o o o o o o

inside of cell

There are other molecules and proteins incorporated in the cell membrane to help with cell-cell communication, transporting things into and out of the cell, and helping to keep the cell membrane fluid (cholesterol).
