In the first 3 months "Baby" is very very small in size and if you are already on balanced diet, you should not worry about intake of Kilocalries(or Calories)(Here C is capital.) In fact a lady may loose weight due to nausea and vomiting of early pregnancy and her behavioral changes due to hormonal changes. In these first 3 months, she must be given 5 mili gram of Folic acid daily and it is preferred to give some syrup containing Multivitamins and Multimineral, in it.By next "trimester"Baby growth becomes faster day by day and there must be increase in weight by about one and half to two kilograms/month, depending about initial weight and height. You do not look after Kilocalary(Unless you have to loose weight.) but Protein intake and Vitamin intake. At least 40% Proteins should be ideally come from Animal source.(Milk and milk products for"Vegans !") rest with mixed diet containing 2 to 4 parts cereals and one part pulses. Normally you require 1 gram/kilogram of body weight/day but in pregnancy, it should be 1.5 to 2 gram/ kilogram/day of body weight of Proteins. For Vitamins and Mineral diet containing "Liberal" intake of Green leafy vegetables and fruits(Including "Vegetable"fruits like Tomato or Carrot.)should be taken. Iron and Calcium salt to be given, preferably at different time of day. Kilocalries will take care of of itself, if food intake is sufficient and you do not have to calculate it.
