Eastman dropped out of school at age 14 to help support his family when his father died. He worked as a messenger boy with an insurance firm, for $3 a week. He then became an office boy, taking charge of filing and even selling some insurance. His salary increased to $5 per week.

He studied accounting in the evenings, and was eventually hired as a junior clerk (teller) at the Rochester Savings Bank, for $15 a week.

At age 25 he began experimenting with Photography after having problems with the old wet plate system on a trip to the Caribbean. The rest, as they say...
