You have not mentioned your laptop model. Most likely your sound card is not supported by Windows 98. You must have got the Motherboard CD when at the time of purchasing. Try to find the sound driver from that CD. However there is more chance that you will not find the driver for windows 98 in CD. I will suggest you to find it from internet or again install Windows XP. Note from the asker: It is a Dell Latitude designed for Windows XP Home.

You cannot play one device through another device.You should be able to find files on one machine with the other machine and play them with the first machine's sound card and other hardware.Share the folder on the machine (computer 1) with the files.On the other machine (computer 2), open a file browser (Explorer in MS Windows) and search the network neighborhood for the files you want to play on computer 1. Open them with the application of your choice on computer 2.
Part from laptops are not compatible with desktops. Laptop hardware is much smaller in size and will not fit in a desktop.
You need to install appropriate sound driver for the card. Use the laptop manufacture website (Dell.com, HP.com and so on) to find what you need.
The most likely cause for sound issues on a computer is a problem with the driver. If you update the driver software for your sound device your problem might go away.
Try it i hope your sound system ll work go to device manager and uninstall the sound driver, restart windows and install the driver again it may solve the problem
