If you really want to heat your pool to a temperature comfortable for swimming YEAR ROUND (Jan-Dec), then either a gas heater or a heat pump would be the most efficient option. You would have to perform a side-by-side comparison of the exact models (gas vs heat pump) using current fuel costs to determine which would be cheaper to operate. Solar heating will extend your swimming season, but will not be able to provide enough heat in the winter months due to cold air temps, cloud cover, and low solar intensity due to your high northern latitude.
