While the brand doesn't necessarily matter, it pays a role in the quality and durability of the product. What you really want to look for is how much memory it holds. Generically the higher the number, the higher the storage. But, TB (Terabyte) is higher than GB (Gigabyte,) which is higher than MB (Megabyte.) Generally, external hard drives don't exist as MB, but rather high amounts of GB and TB. Depending on how much the drive can hold, will fall completely on cost. However, it's easy to find an expensive brand with the same amount of storage as a cheaper brand. It's all just personal preference on if you want to buy a better quality material that will last longer, or something that could break easily, but still holds the same storage.

Depending on size, then for the saving and transporting of data to about 10GB, the new generation of USB flash drive is hard to beat. It is slower than a standard HDD but much more robust, tiny enought to hang around your neck and virtually indestructable. It needs no installation programme and will easily plug into any computer with a USB port (every computer). As flash drive is getting greater capacity, and faster, the days of the rotating HDD are numbered.
