It all depends on what you are looking to do. If you are looking to put on mass, you are going to be looking at a protein that is high in carbohydrates, protein, and calories. To build lean muscle mass, you are going to be looking for a protein shake with a high amount of protein without so many Carbohydrates and Calories. But whey protein is good to use after any workout because it helps bring muscle fibers back together and gives food back to the muscle itself.

Casein is another type of protein. Different from whey because whey goes into the muscles within 30 minutes after your workout. With Casein it breaks down like egg and milk protein, it breaks down over 8 hours. So its good to have Casein protein before you go to sleep.
