There is no such thing. A rifle is a tool, there are many different kinds of rifles for many different kinds of applications. A varmint rifle is a bad tactical carbine. A benchrest rifle is a terrible brush hunting gun. Just as there is no best overall hammer or best overall vehicle, there is no best overall rifle. Use the right tool for the job.
at these ranges, the stability of the bullet is very important and i like a heavier round such as the .308. most smaller rounda are more fickle about the bullet/barrel combo The 243 Winchester is a awesome round to knock down small-medium game at 300 yards-plus as long as the rifle is equipped with a suitable scope. That's my opinion and experience.
Some scopes can cost more than the Air Rifle. Leapers makes some excellent scopes for around $250. Whatever scope you purchase make sure it is designed for air rifles. Air rifles, because of their forward / reverse kick, can break a regular hunting scope not designed for this type of rifle.
it depends on what your hunting
