I've made the trip several times and it seems that driving the #1 west to the #93 -then turning onto #95 for a south shot to Coeur D'Alene, ID -saves 30-45 min. on the trip time versus the #2/#22x/#3 route S from Calgary. Hit I-90 W at Coeur D'Alene. Watch out for wildlife! You cross at Kingsgate.
They are about the same distance, and both are spectacular routes, but the #2/#22x/#3 is often a slow go. Now that BC has finished upgrading most of the #3 thru to Cranbrook it may be a bit faster but construction delays are common.
If you are doing a return trip and not in a hurry I'd recommend trying each route.
