That would depend on the monitors specifications and the preferences of the user. A 27" monitor can display 1920x1200 resolution which is very sharp, but at times this may not be comfortable to look at. I would check each setting and see how comfortable it is to look at for long periods of time.

Setting an LCD monitor can prevent the blackened edges around the screen. It also is the fastest setting with the clearest picture.
That sounds like a BIOS setting. Open the bios and see what you can figure out. there should be a setting that allows both the laptop screen and a remote monitor to be functional at the same time.
Is it the monitor, the video card or a setting? If you have access to another monitor, plug it in and see if it too is upside down. If that's it, the yolk is installed wrong on the monitor CRT.
