Finding drivers...Hi! If you have a name brand computer (Compaq, HP, Dell, Gateway, etc.), I'd start by using the support section of their website. Most of these sites allow you to choose your exact computer model and see all available downloads for it.

If you need a driver for something in a custom built computer or a component added that wasn't from the factory, try the manufacturer's website first. If you need motherboard drivers for your onboard video, Google your motherboard manufacturer and see if you can get it this way. This isn't always easy because a lot of the companies are overseas and you may get sites in complete Japanese!

My third suggestion is http://www.driverguide.com. You will have to make an account, but it's a really great site and it's worth it. Here you can find a driver for just about anything imaginable! There's a wizard where you choose your type of device (motherboard, graphics card, modem, etc.) then you choose your manufacturer then you search for specifics to find your driver.

Let me know if you need more info.

Does every program have access to all hardware?

No, most programs have no access at all to hardware. They call device drivers through the OS to perform input and output. These device drivers are custom written to access the hardware for the device they control. Modern computers use privileged instructions that cause an error if a user program tries to execute them to access hardware. The device drivers have the privilege to execute these instructions and access hardware.
