drain it from the tranny pan. loosen the back bolts half way and the side bolts just some. You may have to pry the back down slightly. {make sure you have a drain pan to catch the fluid. It will take awhile to drain, most of it out. Then remove all bolts and carefully remove pan {note: there will still be more tranny fluid in the pan so be careful not to spill it on yourself or anywhere other then in the drain pan. Finish draining. Look at the fluid, and make sure there isn't any large pieces of metal in the bottom of the pan. If there is you will be needing tranny repair soon, so you may as well have it done now. If there is fine metal particials there, not to worry, this is just from usage. Clean out the pan and clean off the old gasket very well, make it look like it was never there. Now replace it with the new one. "DO NOT" use any type of gasket sealer, unless it is at the far outside edge of the pan. You do not want any sealer to get into the tranny, so be extra careful if you do use some. replace pan and tighten to specs. and only to specs. To tight it will leak, to loose and it will leak. TO SPECS. One other thing. If you do not have a tranny radiator/cooler. I would get one and hook it up. This will keep you from doing tranny repairs if your engine over heats.

A 2001 Mazda Protege has a seal system, meaning the car does not have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid.
