I don't wash my douvet. I put it in the dryer in a Dryel bag and clean it that way. Mine is Down. With Down Alternative, you should be able to wash it in cold water in your washer. Then partially dry it on "air", then hang it to dry the rest of the way. Do not do this with Feather comforters.
It's best to treat a stain as soon as noticed. Try to separate the fabric from the filling, dab with a little cold water, and then spot treat with a mild mix of water and detergent.

The specifics depends on what material the duvet cover is made from. In general, you can remove the duvet cover from the duvet, button or zip it closed, pre-treat any stains and wash it in the washing machine according to the manufacturers directions. Be sure it is not dry clean only!

It depends on the size of your washer but I highly recommend getting it laundered at laundromat that has washer that will hold bigger items. It will get cleaner and won't get damaged or damage your machine.
Some duvets can be washed either by hand or in a washing machine (on the handwash or gentle cycle), while others are strictly dry clean. One of the reasons for this is that a dry clean only duvet can shrink if not cleaned properly and could also possibly snag in the washer/dryer, causing the duvet to tear.
