The best way to praise a dog is with a kind tone of voice. It shouldn't be loud or obnoxious. People can be overly chipper with their praise and accidentally punish the dog because the praise isn't pleasant. For some reason the more excited the owner is, the more intense the praise is, but this can actually scare the dog (especially puppies).
