It is difficult to find the right carpet cleaning solution for removing carpet odors. In fact, many people spend large amounts of money to get carpets and vehicles efficiently cleaned when odors are too strong to get rid of themselves. Many chemically based cleaning solutions simply mask bad smells but cannot remove them. Costly cleaning machines may leave you with a damp carpet that takes hours to dry, rendering the region unusable. In addition, such humidity may lead to even worse odors, associated with mildew and mold. The good news is that there is, in fact, a way to remove odors from carpets and it is totally eco-friendly.

I'm going to assume you've already tried soap and water. Depending on the surface, you could try baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar, or Febreze. If it's your disposal, try the baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar, or running citrus peels through it.

Remove the trap. Firstly, make sure you have a trap. The trap actually stops odors from coming back up the sink into the room by trapping a small amount of water thus blocking gases from coming up through the pipe. IF you DO have a trap, you should disconnect it and make sure it doesn't have some harsh - gross - items trapped in it thus causing the odor.

Make sure the car is empty and clean. I use vinegar and water mix to wash off areas in the car--including the seats, dash and so on. If the odor remains, go to an auto upholstry shop and ask them to spray their enzyme spray that eliminates odors. It didn't totally remove the sour milk smell from my car (a gallon of milk leaked on the rear seat), but it certainly made it manageable.
My manual doesn't cover this, the best they have is the steering gear removal. Do I actually have to remove this or can I replace the bad rod through the engine compartment, by removing the air box to get some room.
