The best thing to do for pepper spray is to rinse briefly with water, about 5-7 minutes, opening your eyes in the water, it will help cool the burning. Then immediately go to a fan or AC unit and sit in front of it for 30-40 minutes, making sure to keep breathing and keep your eyes open. The faster the oil dries the faster the relief sets in. DO NOT STAY IN THE WATER. Water reactivates the chemicals in the spray, and staying in the water too long will just prolong the pain.

Some people have had benefitial results using a few products, but it was only mild relief. Baby shampoo is said to have worked for some people, and others have had success with Dawn dish detergent.

When you take a shower afterwards, hold your head in the shower, looking down. Do not take a "normal" shower, as the pepper spray will still be on your skin. The running water can cause it to run down your body and reactivate the oil, causing burning in unwanted areas of the body if not careful.

But the #1 best way to help your body cope with OC pepper spray is to relax and let it wear off.

Note: Pepper spray can cause reflashes up to 24 hours after being sprayed, use extreme caution during this period of time.

I've also heard of people using whole milk on their skin. Whether patting it on your skin, soaking a towel in it then placing it against the skin, or putting it in a spray bottle - it's supposed to soothe.

What does pepper spray do to you?

Pepper spray is very potent. Just the inhalation of some aerosolized pepper spray can be a significant irritant to many people. It irritates the mucus membranes... can cause some moderate difficulty breathing, coughing, burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and mouth. Also, it will irritate the skin as well. However, this discomfort is mild compared to being sprayed directly in the eyes. Best treatment for pepper spray is water... and lots of it. Some even recommend milk to get it out. Best to avoid it at all costs!

Will pepper spray work on rats?

Sure, but you might want to consider the consequences of using pepper spray in your home for the purposes of driving out vermin. There are specialty sprays out there for wildlife, mostly for use against dogs and bears. Those use a fogger style nozzle, which acts much like a fire extinguisher. That has the added effect of lingering in a room, which is great if you want to keep someone away from you in your home, but it will linger for about an hour or so, you may not want to use it in your home. See ledefensetech.wordpress.com for more information on pepper sprays.
