I hardly ever use a sharpener to sharpen pencils, actually, because it's hard to get a good point. Get an Exacto knife (I think that's how you spell it), and scrape off the top of the pencil equally, going all around the pencil. If you've done that, but the tip still isn't sharp enough, just scrape off the lead, not the wood underneath it. Here are some more in depth/other methods: Sharpening with a knife… Read More

It depends on what you call a regular knife sharpener. If you do not have access to an electric grinder, the next best tool (maybe even better, just a little slower)would be a metal file. Lay the blade on a table or flat surface with the handle hanging off the edge with the sharpened side toward you. A C-Clamp or the equivilent will make the job much easier. Using the flat side of the file… Read More
Out in the woods, a ceramic or stone sharpener is best used for the actual grinding, sometimes called honing. In dire circumstances, any stone (even concrete) harder than the steel itself will do. Be sure to knock off the burrs by leaning onto the backside of the blade while depressing it into a piece of wood. Stropping is not really necessary unless you intend make your blade 'shaving sharp'. It's the same with any knife… Read More
To answer that, there is one way that I personally have studied to make sure a knife is perfectly sharp, and has no dents. If you own a black light all you have to do is take dull or dented knifes and sharpener and black light and set them up, make sure when using the black light the room is dim. After you've sharpened put the knife (slice side up) at a 45 degree angle… Read More
For a symmetrical edge, sharpen the knife by dragging it across the stone in the opposite direction you would move it to slice a thin layer off the stone. This allows a burr to form and prolongs the stone's life. After the burr is formed, you then want to proceed switching to a finer stone and repeat. Contrary to popular view, sharpening is actually done best without water or oil. Using oil or water (especially… Read More

The best thing to do on an ineffective lawnmower blade is to replace it.
