Vehicles over 26,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or combinations over 26,000 lbs. Gross Combination Weight Rating require a CDL, unless they fall under one of the following exemptions:

  • Farm vehicles. Must be plated as a farm vehicle, may not be contracted out for hire and may only be used for the purposes of that farm, must be operated within 150 miles of the farm its registered to, and must be operated by the farmer, immediate family members of the farmer, or direct employees of the farmer.
  • Recreational vehicles. Not operated on a for-hire basis.
  • Military vehicles, in current military service (decommissioned vehicles don't count), and operated by members of the military as a part of their military duties.
  • First response and law enforcement vehicles, operated by emergency services personnel in the course of their duties.

ANY vehicle of any weight class which is either a bus designed to transport more than 15 persons (including the driver) or is carrying a quantity of hazardous materials which requires the display of placards must be operated by a CDL licensed driver.
