Black Box under Dashboard Usually, that's the computer that controls the engine. *On the other hand, if it is a black box that is approximately the size of half a pack of cigarettes that has a switch on one side, it could be the emergency fuel shut-off switch. If it is tripped, such as in a minor fender bender, hitting a pothole too hard, or someone's foot accidentally hits the switch, the vehicle will not start until the switch is turned back on.
