Ship/Shore communications: 1) For roughly the first half mile or so a cell phone might work (depending on the towers in the area). 2) VHF radio is line-of-site and usually works for roughly 26 miles. (ship/ship and ship/shore) 3) HF radio will reach around the globe. (ship/ship and ship/shore) 4) Satellite phones work from roughly 80 degees North to 80 degrees South - realistically anywhere in the world that MOST tourists would go.
While there isnt really a legal definition of what constitutes a boat or a ship, seamen generally go by the principle definition that a BOAT can be carried by a SHIP but a SHIP cannot be carried by a BOAT.

wierd question. Do you mean The British Navy have 20 ships or we will ship your goods tomorrow either way its ship. DO NOT call a submarine a ship as the commander will sink you, its a boat. DO NOT call a ship a boat or the captain will sink you. Where the border between boat and ship is for someone else to answer
The ship and the ferry could both be called boats these days. But generally a boat would be a smaller vessel than the ship or ferry. The difference between the ship and the ferry is that the ferry runs a regular service and travels shorter distances.

A boat is a small wooden vessel. Although it can be made of metal. It unusually hold no more than 5-6 people and is often used for quick transport or for casual fishing out in the ocean. Ships, on the other hand, are massive constructions used for mass transport of people and goods. The Titanic is an example of a ship, while, say, a Canoe is an example of a boat. The main difference between a boat and a ship is purely size. A ship is considerably larger than a boat, to the extent that a boat could actually fit on a ship.
