There are two good candidates for "bright light in the western sky". Look to the west at sunset; you should be able to see the constellation Orion. To the right of Orion is the planet Venus; this is probably the one you are seeing. To the left of Orion is Sirius, one of the brightest stars in the sky.
For the next couple of months, Venus will set a few minutes later each day and become brighter and brighter as Venus catches up to the Earth in our orbit around the Sun.
I highly recommend the free, open-source planetarium program "Stellarium" if you ever want to know "What is that light in the sky?"
