Tokyo, the de facto capital of Japan, is on Honshu, which is the largest island of the Japanese chain. But Honshu is divided into five different prefectures, which include Chūbum, Chūgoku, Kansai, Kantō, and Tōhoku. The prefectures might be considered the equivalent of U.S. "states" and each of the prefectures has a capital.
