Gain (গায়েন) is a Bengali surname of the Kayastha caste in Bengal, and Brahmin in Assam's Barak Valley. Some are also Varendra Brahmins in Eastern Bengal, of the Kashyapa gotra.
The surname originated as an honorific title bestowed upon bards, i.e. composers of music and poetry, irrespective of caste. During British rule, most took to Zamindari and other professions similar to the Kayasthas. In Bengal, Kayasthas were regarded as the highest Hindu caste along with the Brahmins and Baidyas.
