The possible reason could be lack of blood flow to your foot. When you sleep it is possible that you are cutting off the circulation to your foot, therefore causing it to cramp up. A possible solution would be to make sure that when you sleep, you legs are not crossed. If they are, then blood flow will be decreased and the chance of having a foot cramp will be higher.

There are a number of causes of leg cramps, some age or gender related, some related to bigger health issues, and some very simple problems related to our life style choices. Some common causes of leg cramps are sitting or lying in the same position for too long, not drinking enough water, or the lack of iron, potassium, magnesium, or calcium in your diet. Women are also more prone to leg cramps during pregnancy or when they hit menopause. Diabetics are also prone to leg cramps.

Cramping is generally caused by an imbalance in normal muscle function such as fatigue, lack of water, stress on the muscle. It is the body's natural response to stress to let you know that something is wrong and needs attention. Stretching helps relax the muscle and regain normal contractions.
