Sarcoidosis is a multi system disorder characterized in affected organs by a type of inflammation called granulomas (gran-u-lo-mahs). The cause is unknown.

Granulomas are tiny lumps of cells that can form in various organs of the body.

Lungs, skin, liver, spleen, brain, nerves, heart, bones, joints, breasts and kidney's are some of the areas that can be affected. More than one organ can and usually is affected.

Sarcoidosis can be in active and non-active phase.

The exact cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, although it is thought that it might occur when your immune system overreacts to something such as an unknown toxin, drug or pathogen that enters your body through your airways. Some doctors or researchers speculate that the bacterica may be something called nontuberculous mycobacterium which is one a noncontagious bacteria that causes tuberculosis. Other theories are that sarcoidosis is partly genetic, laying dormant until it is exposed to an unknown toxin. A normal immune system usually protects the body from viruses and bacteria. With Sarcoidosis something called T-helper lymphocytes over respond to some perceived threat such as a virus and produce small areas of inflammation called granulomas.
The causes of sarcoid disease are not clear. Current evidence suggests that sarcoidosis is due to the abnormal proliferation of a certain cell called a T-helper cell, which functions to help immune cells attack a foreign substance.

Scleroderma is also know as systemic sclerosis. It is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by hardening of the skin. Severe form also affects internal organs. Genetic and environmental causes are attributed. Mutations in the HLA gene seems to play a major role in the pathogenesis of some cases.
