It depends on who you talk to, but most people would say the central beliefs of Christianity are that God sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to earth as a human to die in atonement for the sins of human beings and grant them access to eternal life. Christians consider Jesus to be God along with the Holy Spirit, three persons as one God. Christians believe in life after death, the return of Jesus at the end of the world, and reward for those who put their faith in God in the form of heaven.

.

Catholic AnswerThe central beliefs of Christianity are contained in the Nicene Creed:

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Some of the "core" beliefs in Christianity are that...

  1. There is only one God.
  2. Son of God, Jesus Christ died for our sins.
  3. The Bible is the word of God and that it must be followed.
  4. There is an afterlife, either heaven or hell.
  5. God is the sole creator of the universe.

That Jesus fulfilled the law of the Old Testament by being a sacrifice to pay for mankinds sin

----------------------------------

The above is true also, but the resurrection is the central belief of Christianity.

No honest history scholar or professor will deny the resurrection of Jesus.

The event proved Jesus is God.

People are imprisoned by guilt, anger and remorse. Jesus empowers us to forgive others and ourselves, the Way to abundant New Life.

The Bible is a helpful guide, but it is NOT the verbatim word of God. This central belief concerning forgiveness is explained in the Bible, but Christianity is a religion centered on a Living God, nor a book.

The central belief of the Christian faith, as opposed to other faiths, is that salvation and eternal life is only possible through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, God's own Son, who was crucified and rose again after three days - thereby conquering death.

There are three central beliefs in the Christian Faith: First, that Christ died for us, an atonement for the sins of humanity; Second, that He rose from the dead, thus conquering death forever; Third, that he will come again to pronounce salvation for those who believe that He died for their sins.

There is one God but He is three persons, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

God is holy, just, merciful, gracious, patient, abundant in goodness, love, faithfulness and truth. God has no beginning and no end.

God created all things.

God originally made man and women like Himself. They disobeyed God and as a consequence all people inherit the first man and woman's fallen/sin nature and are separated from God because of this. Everyone is helpless and unable to work their way back to a right relationship with God and are therefore under His condemnation.

Jesus Christ is the unique Son of God, God in the flesh. He came to earth to die as a sacrifice for sin.

Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ as God's provision for the sin of mankind. There is no other salvation except in Christ Jesus.

The central teaching of Jesus was the coming Kingdom of God as mentioned in the model prayer we commonly call today 'The Our Father.'

The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible says this about the Kingdom of God: “The word 'kingdom' is found fifty-five times in Matthew; twenty times in Mark, forty-six times in Luke and five times in John. When allowance is made for the use of the word to refer to secular kingdoms and for parallel verses of the same sayings of Jesus, the phrase 'the kingdom of God' and equivalent expressions (e.g., 'Kingdom of heaven,' 'his kingdom') occurs about eighty times . . . These statistics show the great importance of the concept in the teachings of Jesus . . . There can, therefore, be little doubt that the phrase 'the kingdom of God' expresses the main theme of His teaching” (Vol. III, Zondervan, Grand Rapids, 1976, p. 804).

Is Jesus essential to Christianity?

Yes! Jesus is the defining character of Christianity. Without Jesus, Christianity would not exist. The central Christian belief is that Jesus is the Son of God, that He came to earth through the virgin Mary, died on the cross and rose to life again after three days. God's purpose in this was to save the human race from the penalty of sin (wrongdoing), which is death. Christianity is the belief that Jesus died (and rose again) so that we don't have to.
