A change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA is called a mutation.

Mutations take several forms:

* substitution: one base is replaced by another

* deletion: one or more nucleotides disappear from the sequence and the rest close up

* insertion: one or more nucleotides appear between what had been adjacent nucleotides

* duplication: a form of insertion in which a sequence of nucleotides is copied and now appears twice instead of once. Mutations can be caused by certain types of radiation, including ultraviolet (UV), and certain chemical compounds, which are therefore referred to as mutagenic.

Mutations are particularly likely to occur at a point during replication of DNA when the two strands are separated.
