The convict was a hard hearted and cunning person. Before reaching the prison he was a good man. But he was out of job and had no money. His wife was ill and dying. Therefore he stole food for her but was arrested by the police. This was a turning point in his life. He became a wild beast from a man because he was tortured in the prison and was treated very badly. One day he managed to escape from prison. Then he met Bishop. The hospitality he received at his cottage and his kind behaviour softened him a little. But still he stole his candlesticks. He was again caught by the police and they brought him back to Bishop's cottage to identify the candlesticks. But the Bishop saved him from the police. As a result of this the convict's belief in humanity was restored.

The convict was not a bad person before he was beaten in the prison for 10 years. He lived with her loving wife , Jeanette . Then a bad year came when Jeanette fell ill . The convict has no job and money to buy food . Jeanette was starving, dying , so he stole to buy her food . But at last , Jeanette died of the illness and starvation. And on other hand the convict was arrested for stoling . But the punishment given to the convict was not justified. He was seasoned and habitual criminal . He had no money and had to steal food for his wife. He was sentenced to 10 years in the prison bulks . One day came when the convict get out of the prison . Then one day bishop came in his life. When he hears the story of the convict he showed his sympathy for him. He treats him like a friend even after the convict stole his candlesticks. But the bishop freed him from this sergeant by telling that he himself given the candlesticks to the convict . The bishop give the candlesticks to the convict and helps him to get to Paris . And now the convict gain a knowledge by the bishop that "this body is the temple of living god "
