A lot. Although they look similar they are played differently. The main difference is the mechanism used to create the notes/pitches. The valve trombone is basically a baritone horn in the shape of a trombone. It uses a combination of 3 valves like a trumpet to generate the different pitches by the vibration of the player's lips in the mouth piece and the combination of valves pressed down. A slide trombone uses a slide to change the wave length of the ptich combined with the vibration of the player's lips in the mouthpiece. Notes or pitches rely upon sound waves. To change pitch you change the length of the sound wave. The valve trombone uses valves to chnages the course of the air producing the sound wave to lengthen it or shorten it.
