There are a number of cities in Texas that are right on the Rio Grande, with corresponding cities in Mexico just across the river. I guess El Paso, TX and Ciudad Juarex, Chihauhua, MX are "closest", because the western end of the Rio Grande is narrower than the mouth of the river at the eastern end.

Although, really, who can tell? As the Rio Grande snakes back and forth, the border follows the river, and there are many "fingers" of Matamoros, Mexico that seem to poke right into Brownsville, TX.

There are a LOT of places where you could easily throw a frisbee from Mexico to Texas.

I would start with El Paso because it is directly adjacent to Cuidad Juarez. Just a fence, and a pedestrian border crossing and a road border crossing, and they are only the width of the fence apart. Like Mexicali/Calexio...and Tijuana/SanDiego Calif/Mexico. Further East and South is the Cuidad Acunà -Mex. - Del Rio Tx crosssing. then there seems to ba a very long way to the next crossing: Libraimiento Mx- Eagle Pas, Tx. At Anzaludas Dam there is a crossing, the dam is the road-bed and what appears to be power generating stations on both sides. Meandering more and more East and South is Hidalgo Tx -Reynosa Mx crossing, a very heavy one by the looks of it, cars back up for miles attempting to enter US and on the Mexican side a very pretty well-tended Garden and Visitors Center. A couple more crossings, appear abandoned, and finally the Interstate 69E South Terminus in Brownsville Tx crossing in to Matamoros Mx...then no crossings , the Rio Grande flows to the Gulf..with a fence on the US side.

There are many cities that are just at the other side of the border with Mexico, and all of them are separated by the Rio Grande River. Even some of them were part of the same original city until the Mexican-American War, such as Juarez and El Paso. From west to east:

  • Juarez, bordering El Paso
  • Manuel Ojinaga, bordering Presidio
  • Ciudad Acuña, bordering Del Rio
  • Piedras Negras, bordering Eagle Pass
  • Nuevo Laredo, bordering Laredo
  • Ciudad Miguel Aleman, bordering Roma
  • Ciudad Camargo, bordering Rio Grande City
  • Reynosa, bordering McAllen
  • Nuevo Progreso, bordering Progreso
  • Matamoros, bordering Brownsville
