Adopted in 1905, the flag features three stars representing the grand divisions of the state: East, Middle and West. The stars are bound together in indissoluble unity by an unending white band. The meaning of the three stars are for culturally and geologically, East, Middle, and West Tennessee are as different as any three state could be.

It is a lovely and unique bit of Symbolism in red, white and blue that appears to have been created by a modern artist but was actually adopted in 1905 and first flown in 1911. It features three white stars representing the three geographical areas of the state in a blue emblem within a red field with specific instructions legislated on their placement and a strip of blue on the fly. While it does not have the recognition factor of the New Mexico or Oklahoma flags it is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful and symbolic of the US State flags.
