Body language accompanies verbal communication very closely to strengthen, add colour, and/or modify the words spoken. When we speak, we use our hands, our faces, and our eyes to complement our words. In fact, these forms of kinemics can actually contradict what we are saying. Imagine you are talking to two friends. You tell an outrageous lie to one of your friends, then turn and wink at your other friend. Your wink has just told that person: it's not true. In addition to body language, we also use paralanguage such as the tone of our voice. Again, this can affect the meaning of our words, like the difference between "I know" said with a normal intonation and "I KNOW!" said with volume and impatience. When we speak, we use various forms of non-verbal communication at the same time and these must all coordinate to convey our meaning appropriately. This is known as multi-modality because we communicate using many modes/modalities (methods, means, ways) at the same time. When these don't match, they can cause confusion and misunderstanding. This is not uncommon across cultures where there are differences in the way we communicate non-verbally. But we also use mismatching of modalities for humour: picture a man dressed in a tuxedo standing close to a woman in a wedding dress at the front of a church filled with formally dressed people. The priest asks him the question "Do you take this woman....?" and he looks at his dirty fingernails, hesitates, shrugs, and says, "Okay." In how many ways did his non-verbal (and verbal) communication mismatch the situation?

Body language complements verbal communication by adding non-verbal cues such as gestures, facial expressions, and posture to enhance the message being conveyed. It can also provide additional context, clarify the speaker's emotions, and emphasize certain points. Overall, body language plays a crucial role in effective communication by helping to convey sincerity, interest, and engagement.
