John Dickinson is famous for being one of the founding fathers of the United States and for his role in drafting the Articles of Confederation. He also wrote the "Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania" which argued against British taxation before the American Revolution.
All 13 states were invited to send delegates to the Constitutional Convention. Only Rhode Island refused to send delegates, fearing (correctly) that the Convention didn't really intend to revise the Articles of Confederation, but rather to replace it with a Constitution that created a strong federal government.

John Dickinson came out of retirement to serve as the Delaware delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He served on the Committee on Postponed Matters, helped to engineer the Great Compromise, and launched a letter writing campaign to persuade ratification of the Constitution.
