That is a very good question. Bread in America is a big problem. You can get a standard loaf of white American bread for about two dollars (give or take a little depending on where you live). But that stuff is nasty. Whether you buy it in a supermarket or a bakery, it is so processed and additive laden, it's almost inedible. Unfortunately about 90 to 95 percent of Americans don't seem to notice, which is why it's hard to find anything else. I seek out certain special niches that sell uncontaminated bread, for which I pay four to six dollarsper loaf. Sad story.

True, so true: but I can find white or wheat for $1.00/loaf (1 lb).
The really good bread, WHOLE WHEAT, is $4.00/loaf & up. So go bake your own if you have an oven, can gather the ingredients, know HOW to knead & HAVE THE TIME. :)

The standard whole wheat breads available are no better than the white bread, and for the same reasons. I used to bake bread and many other things, but am physically unable to now. The questioner was asking about average price, and now he/she has information from both sides of America. I did want the questioner to know that in America there is bread and then there is bread.
