Yes they do exist. You can check this out in BMW 3 series convertibles for instance, they have 6 cylinder petrol engines. They either come in a straight line arrangement or v6 arrangement. Some of the v6 engine cars were built as far back as 1905.
The number one cylinder on any 4 & 5 cylinder is the cylinder at the front of the engine. On a GM V6 & V8 it is the front cylinder on the driver's side.

The Sunbird can readily accept any GM 60 degree V6 or GM 4-cylinder engine including Quad4 and Ecotec engines. GM 90 degree V6 and Cadillac 4.1,4.5,4.9 engines will also fit, but only if you have a big hammer and are willing to deal with some fun suspension issues.

If it is a 4 cylinder it has 4, V6 then it has 6. Some 4 cylinders do have 8 plugs, Ford for instance, but not the GM 4 cylinders.
