I remember the mid 70's Jeep had a 6 cylinder 258
The spark plug gap for a 1984 258 6 cylinder Jeep should be set at .033 inches. New spark plugs will be preset and should not need adjustments.
check your plugs........
anything is possible with the right talent, but changing engine sizes and types always creates lots of problems with trans mounting, accessory mounting etc..... Also, Jeep did not offer a V6 in 1984, only a straight 6 (4.2l / 258 cid).
for all 258 CID engines the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Cylinder one is the front by the radiator and on the distibutor cap, plug one wire should go to the socket closest to the passenger fender, then the rotation is clockwise as viewed from the top.

SHOULD BE, BUT YOU CAN CHECK YOUR LOCAL JUNK YARD FOR VEHICLES TO ASK THEM IF THEY INTERCHANGE, I AM SURE THEY WILL.
they normally came with a 258 6 cylinder. The base V8 was a 301. 304ci Sorry, my mistake. It was a 304.
#1 That's the first spark plug in the head up front.
Both the 258 and the 4.0 are the same size externally.
