Spartacus was one of the leaders of what historians have called the Third Servile war, which lasted from 73 B.C. to 71 B.C. The other leaders where Crixus and Oenomaus. Spartacus became the sole leader after Oenomaus and Crixus died (in 73 B.C. and 72 B.C. respectively). Some 70 gladiators escaped from Italy's largest gladiatorial school in and Capua, near Naples. They took refuge on Mount Vesuvius and defeated a Roman militia which was sent after them. After this many other slaves joined them. There were more victories against small Roman forces and more slaves joining. Their size reached 120,000. Eventually the rebels were slaughtered by a Roman force of six legions
