Taoism is a traditional philosophy/religion found throughout Asia, with some modern extensions into the western world. Taoism is based on a belief in a fundamental essence called Tao that is beyond the ability of words to capture, but which manifests as a living force in all of creation. it's basic philosophical principles are outlined in the Tao Te Ching. Though taoism itself does not have a huge number of adherents, Chinese traditional medicine is based in taoist principles, and Chinese, Korean, and Japanese forms of Buddhism have borrowed heavily from Taoist beliefs.
