Canonization means that the Pope makes a beautified person a saint.

The answer above is partially correct; however, there is a little more to it. A lay person can only be canonized after they have performed three miracles and these miracles have to be documented by the Catholic Church. When that has been done, then this person will be canonized a Saint. I'm not sure, but I think one of the last people to be canonized a Saint was Mother Theresa.

Canonization is the lengthy process by which a candidate's sainthood is verified by the Catholic Church. There has to be no doubt that the person is in Heaven.
