You should really talk about nuclear fusion, the rest of the atom is not relevant. In the fusion reaction which it is hoped to be used on earth, a nucleus of deuterium (one proton, one neutron) fuses with a nucleus of tritium (one proton, two neutrons) to form a helium nucleus (two protons, two neutrons) plus a free neutron. Energy is released in this reaction. The difficulty so far for the experimenters has been to get it started at all, and the actual design of a working power plant is still below the horizon.
