The definition of oil containment booms is, 'a temporary floating barrier used to contain an oil spill.' Containment booms help to prevent polluting the shore line.
In reference to the word "Containment," in the historical context of Communism, containment is the blocking of another nation's attempts to spread its influence. The actual word containment means to block passage or quarantine.
It was called the CONTAINMENT POLICY.Please see this WikiAnswers Article which details how Containment worked.

Containment Policy
Foreign Service Officer, George F. Kennan, is the author of the policy on containment. Containment was the strategy the US used during the Cold War with the Soviet Union.
Donald E. Brunner has written: 'Materials for oil containment boom' -- subject(s): Oil spill booms
The telephone, and containment booms. If you don't know what you're dealing with you MUST get someone with testing equipment into the spill area to figure out what it is. Put containment booms around it to keep the problem from getting worse, and get someone in there to determine what you're dealing with.
i dont know
Iron nanoparticles can be used in the remediation of contaminated soil in certain cases- see related link. The clean up of an offshore oil spill is different. Much of the spilled oil can not be recovered, however they are trying to mitigate the harmful effects by selective burning, skimmers, dispersants and containment booms.

because they were leaking out to much oil
It is a simple question for which I do not have a simple answer as of May 4. There are a lot of efforts being made to keep the oil spill away from area beaches through oil booms, but bad weather and winds can make containment difficult. The containment dome is scheduled to be installed very soon. The spill has been moving eastward, towards Florida, but destined to reach Florida? I'm just not sure. See related link of the NOAA website, where they track the spill.
It is hard to "fix" an oil spill. Probably, the most important is to stop the well by flowing, by drilling relief wells. In addition, containment booms try to keep the oil from spreading and they are only partially successful in this effort. The oil spill keeps getting larger, and they can't deploy the booms rapidly to hold back the spill. Controlled burns of the oil also reduces the volume of oil. The recent installment of the LMRP (lower marine riser package) which captures the oil as it is escaping the well, and flows it up a marine riser, is working very well at present. They are using dispersants, injected subsea and also sprayed from planes on the surface of the oil spill to break up the oil. That's five right there- 1) relief wells, 2) booms 3) burns 4) LMRP and 5) dispersants.
It is likely that some of the panhandle area of Florida, near Pensacola will have some oil contamination. They are still doing selective burns and setting containment booms. BP has teams in place in Florida, to do inspections and clean up, if the oil spill extends that far. The NOAA website posts every day maps showing the trajectory of the spill- see related link.
Oil booms.
Booms -- Floating barriers placed around the oil or around whatever is leaking the oil. Booms contain the oil so skimmers can collect it.Skimmers -- Boats, vacuum machines, and oil-absorbent plastic ropes that skim spilled oil from the water's surface after booms have corralled it. The skimmer collects oil into a container so it can be removed.Chemical dispersants -- Materials that break down the oil into its chemical constituents. This helps disperse the oil and make it less harmful to wildlife and shorelines.In-situ burning -- Igniting freshly spilled oil while it's still floating on the water.
